After travelling yesterday evening for over four hours to get to Manchester, I was pleased to finally arrive at hotel and get a chance to catch up with fellow mentor Barry in preparation for being introduced to 30 of the students that will be attending our week away in Aberdovey!!!
After arriving at the Academy this morning, I was feeling very excited, but also unsure on what to expect, especially once all the students came into the classroom to be introduced to us!!! Once all the formalities where over and done with, we all ventured outside for team building activities – luckily for us, the sun was shining!!!
There was a great mixture of personalities and during the day’s activities we had a great opportunity to see how the students interacted with eachother. It was really interesting to see how they overcome the tasks given to them and how well they worked as a team when set a challenge. There was the odd occasion when the Instructor had to remind them about paying attention and listening to eachother, but overall they were a good bunch.
On reflection, today has made me feel even more honoured to be part of such an incredible journey. To see the vulnerability and lack of confidence in the students (even the noisiest ones!!) and seeing them overcoming their nerves and fears, just shows what a fantastic opportunity being part of the Outward Bound Mentoring Programme is, for both the students and the Mentors.
I am now even more excited and no longer worried about what lies ahead with our week away. Whatever happens, I am 100% confident that it will be FABULOUS!!!
